Gagaku(old Japanese court music)

     Gagaku is music and dancing which has handed down from ancient time in the Imperial Court, temples and shrines. 

It is performed in the ceremony of the Imperial Court, a banquet. 

Gagaku Department of the Ministry of the Imperial Household inherits about 100 music now. 

Length of the music is 3 times Meiji period in process of inheritance.

8 kinds of musical instruments are used in Gagaku, hichiriki, sho, ryuteki, kakko, shoko, taiko, biwa and koto. 

 　　

These instrumentals are very expensive. 

And there is almost no craftsman who can make these instrumentals. 

This is a serious problem.
